Our NEW SERUM is here

For years, my relationship to skincare has been all about plants. As an herbalist and aromatherapy enthusiast, I’ve spent nearly a decade formulating botanical skincare, working with medicinal plants and exploring the ways we can nourish not only the skin but the entire being — mind, body and spirit.

My approach has been guided by an inner knowing that plants offer us so much more than beautiful ingredients. They carry complex chemistry, rich histories, energetics and a kind of intelligence that continues to inspire the way I formulate.

But recently, my own skincare routine has been expanding.

I started getting more skin-focused facials and experienced firsthand what it feels like to integrate more concentrated, active nutrients into my routine. I became interested in the ways certain ingredients could offer targeted support for the skin — helping to brighten, hydrate, improve tone, and support the skin barrier.

What surprised me most was how naturally this new interest aligned with what I already knew about plants. I didn’t feel the need to choose between botanical skincare and active ingredients. Instead, I began to imagine the possibilities in bringing them together.

There is something compelling about discovering an ingredient that works in a direct, purposeful way.

Vitamin C, for example, is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin from oxidative stress and support collagen production. Niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B3, is known for its ability to strengthen the skin barrier, improve skin tone, and help maintain optimal hydration.

These are ingredients with a growing body of research behind them, and I’ve become increasingly interested in how they can be incorporated into formulas that feel good on the skin and align with our philosophy at GARA.

For me, the key is not simply adding more actives or pursuing the highest possible concentration. It’s about finding ingredients that are effective, thoughtfully formulated, and complementary to one another.

I want my skincare to be purposeful without being aggressive. I want it to support my skin without overwhelming it. And I want to understand not only what an ingredient can do, but how it fits into the larger picture of skin health.

This is where my love of plants comes full circle.

Herbs and botanical oils offer their own unique forms of nourishment. They contain naturally occurring fatty acids, antioxidants, and aromatic compounds that can complement the benefits of active ingredients. Some of my favorite botanical ingredients have long histories in traditional skincare and their qualities make them especially beautiful companions to concentrated vitamins.

Evening Primrose Oil

Rich in essential fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), evening primrose oil helps nourish the skin and support its moisture barrier. I love its ability to leave the skin feeling soft, supple and replenished. It brings a kind of quiet depth to a formula, supporting the skin's natural renewal process while active ingredients do their work. I've developed a relationship with the plant itself over the last few years and now it is growing in our garden, providing nectar for the bees and food for the birds.

Carrot Seed Oil

Carrot seed is a wonderful example of the complexity of plant chemistry. Depending on the extraction method, carrot seeds can offer aromatic compounds or antioxidant constituents. Carrot seed essential oil and carrot seed carrier oil are quite different, so understanding which form we are working with matters. In both our Youth Serum and Active Essence formulations, we use carrot seed carrier oil. This rich oil offers a plethora of rich antioxidants that protect the skin from environmental stressors. It is packed with carotenoids which help to repair sun damage and slow premature skin aging.

Rose Hip Oil

Rose hip oil is one of my favorite oils for building a healthy complexion. Naturally rich in essential fatty acids and containing carotenoids and other antioxidant compounds, it helps nourish the skin and maintain softness and suppleness. It has a beautiful affinity for formulas designed to restore radiance and the appearance of more even-toned skin.

Rose

Rose has been a treasured plant ally across cultures for centuries, both for its aromatic beauty and its place in personal care. Whether working with rose oil, rose hydrosol, or other rose preparations, I’m continually drawn to its sensory and practical qualities. Rose has the most complex aromatic profile, containing over 400 different compounds. It brings a softness to a formula that goes beyond its scent. It invites us to slow down and experience skin care as a ritual, rather than another task on our list.

A Merging of Two Worlds

As I explored concentrated actives more deeply, I began developing a new serum for myself — one that brought together stable Vitamin C, niacinamide (Vitamin B3), pure aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and a thoughtful blend of botanical oils and herbs that I felt called to explore.

It felt like an evolution in my approach to formulation. And it was fun to experiment with!

My intention was to support my skin in complementary ways: protection, hydration, barrier support, and a brighter, more luminous complexion.

I wanted a formula that felt active but not harsh, nourishing but not heavy. Something that would absorb easily into my skin, leaving it feeling soft, balanced and hydrated.

For me, this is where the most interesting work happened, not in choosing between science and nature, but in understanding how they can work together. When I put these ingredients together — with a mix of intuition and research, something magical happened. A formula that transformed my skin in a matter of months was born. And now, I get to share it with you.

Our Youth Serum is rooted in the restorative qualities of herbs, freshly distilled hydrosols, and nourishing oils. It is a reflection of the botanical world that first inspired GARA.

This new formula is an evolution. It pairs concentrated vitamins with the nourishment of some of my most beloved plant allies.

What is an "active" ingredient?

The word active can bring to mind complicated routines, potent treatments, or products that promise to transform the skin overnight.

But I’ve come to a more thoughtful approach.

Effective skincare doesn’t need to be excessive. It can be a few well-chosen ingredients, formulated with intention. It can include clinically studied nutrients alongside botanical extracts that nourish and support the skin. And clean skincare, to me, is about more than what we leave out. It is also about the quality of what we put in, the integrity of our sourcing, and the care taken in bringing a formula to life.

At GARA, we continue to look to plants as our teachers. We work with ingredients that have a purpose, value small-scale and thoughtful production and believe that the experience of caring for your skin should feel as good as the results you seek.

My own exploration into clinical facials and active skincare has not taken me away from my roots as an herbalist. It has given me another perspective, one that has deepened my appreciation for both the science of skin and the extraordinary complexity of plants.

The longer I work with skin, the more I see it as something to listen to rather than something to correct.

Our skin changes with the seasons, our environment, our hormones, our experiences, and the many stages of our lives. What it needs today may be different from what it needed a year ago. Sometimes that means reaching for a nourishing botanical oil. Sometimes it means introducing a targeted active ingredient. Sometimes it means simplifying our routine and giving the skin a little reprieve. I’m interested in skincare that meets the skin where it is, offering support without asking it to be something else.

This new chapter in my own skincare journey has reminded me that we can remain deeply connected to the natural world while embracing the advances of modern skin science.

We can honor the wisdom of plants and appreciate the value of concentrated nutrients.

And perhaps most importantly, we can approach skin care with curiosity, allowing our understanding of beauty, health, and the skin itself to continue evolving.
