The energy is high on this midsummer day, can you feel it in the air?
Today is the longest day and the shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. The darkness is fleeting, bright and warm. The night only lingers a few hours before first light is on the horizon. This is the celebration of LITHA, the honoring of the life-giving light that comes from our sun.
The goddess is pregnant, belly full and growing, and the garden is beginning to produce fruit from the flowers pollinated during the spring. It is the first day of summer and the Sun God is a the peak of his fertility. Together, this sacred union represents essence of summer, the peak growing season of the year. It is a time for tending the garden, both in our physical and mental realms. A time for work, rest and play. We are blessed with the sunshine in abundance for the next few months and the plant kingdom and all of the creatures that inhabit the forest enjoy the brightest and most abundant time of year.
Litha is a day for celebration and joy, a day to gather in community in gratitude for the life of our star. The sacred bonfire represents the warmth and power of the sun. It is a time to seek guidance in the flames, to honor the sacred power and beauty of fire. This element is both dangerous and life-saving, giving us rich metaphor shared by our ancestors throughout millennia.
And yet, just as the sun reaches it's peak power, we hear a whisper and a promise of the return of the darkness. This bitter sweet moment of climax also signals the slow and steady draw into darkness. From now on, the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer. The transition begins today. It is time to embrace the fire, the heat, the energy, let it run through your veins invigorating a new sense of awareness as we enter the season of summer.
