Distilling vetiver roots into hydrosol is a mesmerizing aromatic process, steeped in tradition and mystique. Vetiver is known as "the scent of tranquility," and has a rich history dating back to ancient India where it has been revered for its myriad of therapeutic properties for hundreds of years. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat various ailments, from skin conditions to stress-related disorders, vetiver has found its way into many natural skincare and aromatherapy products due to its intoxicating scent and rejuvenating effects on both the body and mind.
When it comes to hair and scalp care, vetiver is a cherished ally. Its cooling and soothing properties make it ideal for calming irritated scalps and promoting healthy hair growth. Massaging the vetiver hydrosol into the scalp not only nourishes the hair follicles but also stimulates circulation, enhancing nutrient delivery directly to the roots.
In this distillation process we felt first hand the potency of vetiver's spirit. We experienced the beauty and depth of its metaphor, "rooted." Its earthy scent has a grounding effect, anchoring one's consciousness to the present moment and instilling a profound sense of calm. It is an ally for spiritual practices, where it aids in calming the mind during meditation, encouraging introspection, and emotional healing at the root level. The scent of vetiver hydrosol has the remarkable ability to unravel deep-seated emotions, allowing one to confront and work through past traumas, whether emotional or physical.
As the roots simmer gently in the still, a symphony of earthy and woody notes fill the air, invoking a sense of deep groundedness. We feel the energy of the plant, so concentrated in its roots, rising up in the steam. As the plant's spirit is brought out of the darkness of the earth's soil and into the light merging with water, its aromatic vibration is perfectly balanced between sweet and smoky, woodsy and herbaceous.
The process of distilling vetiver roots into hydrosol is not merely a process of extracting botanical essence; it is an ancient ritual that embodies the symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world. Through its multifaceted therapeutic properties, vetiver hydrosol serves as a gentle yet potent healer, nurturing both body and soul on their journey towards balance and well-being.
We spent three full days working with this plant. Harvesting, cleaning, and cleaning some more, it was truly a labor of love. And what a gift to spend every moment honoring the power and potency of this plant. We are delighted to share its essence with you.

The Sweet Annie Hydrosol is revered for its sweet, herbaceous, and minty aroma, boasting classic Artemisia undertones. Its strong aromatic profile makes it an excellent choice as an aromatherapy mist when working with emotional trauma. Sweet Annie serves as an ally for helping one find inner peace and harmony. Many aromatherapists and perfumers love to employ this plant not only for its pleasing aroma but for its powerful impacts on mental health.
With its pleasant and powerful aroma, Sweet Annie Hydrosol can keep bothersome insects at bay, making it an eco-friendly alternative to chemical repellents. This hydrosol can be used as an overall deodorizing body spray, acting as both a perfume and a cleansing toner.
Sweet Annie, also sometimes called Sweet Wormwood, holds a special place in the modern and ancient practices of herbalism due to the presence of artemisinin, a compound found exclusively in this plant. Artemisinin has been a key component in traditional herbal treatments for malaria, demonstrating its efficacy in combating this deadly disease. Numerous studies, such as those by Tu Youyou, the Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 2015, have highlighted the importance of artemisinin in malaria treatment.
Sweet Annie has also been shown to have overall immune-boosting effects. Many compounds found in this plant can help support the body's natural defenses. Animal studies show that Artemisia annua increases antiinflammatory prostaglandin levels in the gastric mucosa, thus helping to treat gastric ulcers.
This plant has been used by many traditional cultures for thousands of years and has many benefits to offer both externally and internally. Its sweet and aromatic qualities make it an excellent choice for aromatherapy, while its historical significance in malaria treatment showcases its potential in the field of herbalism. Whether you seek emotional support, a natural insect repellent, or an overall body deodorizer, Sweet Annie Hydrosol offers a holistic approach to health that is worth exploring.

We have been exploring scent on a much deeper level, diving not only into the chemical make up of essential oils but also into how scent is inextricably tied to our memories and emotional experiences. In our inquiry, we have been fortunate to be able to distill several essential oils to work with in our formulas.
The access to high quality plants and the ability to witness the aromatic compounds being pulled, coaxed, extracted from the natural materials has given me great joy and is one of the many reasons we are sharing some of our house-distilled essential oils with you! These oils are ALIVE. You can see it in their color, smell it in the scent and feel their life-force on your skin.
WHAT IT IS
Anoint yourself with the energetic of cedar with our house-distilled cedar wood essential oil roll on.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Atlas Cedarwood has a variety of energetic properties and practical uses in aromatherapy and perfumery. Used for building ships, bath houses, making incense and shrines, the wood itself has deep roots in both the masculine and feminine. The scent of the oil we distilled from the heart wood of the tree that was cut down near our home is like a warm embrace. It has a mysterious soulful, contemplative quality, refined and introspective.
The first note is sweet, slightly musky yet still clear and bright. The second note is woody, a full warm body with fleeting balsamic notes. On the skin, it merges with one’s own scent, changing and evolving throughout the day. As time moves forward, the scent tends to get sweeter and sweeter, a lesson I think the tree gives to us. This is the scent of life, fleeting but sweet up until the very end.
HOW TO USE
Apply to the inside of each wrist, on both sides of the neck, behind each ear and on the forehead to anoint oneself with the energetic of cedar.

WHAT IT IS
Anoint yourself with the calming essence of lavender with our house-distilled cedar wood essential oil roll on.
WHY WE LOVE IT
The all mighty lavender, what is not to love? Lavender grows abundantly in the Ojai Valley, so much so that we have the Ojai Lavender Days Festival every year. We were fortunate to get a big harvest from a local producer and we distilled lavender essential oil from the fragrant, fresh plant material. The scent of our essential oil is sweet and herbaceous, a classic floral lavender aroma with a sweeter, deeper note. The energetic of this oil is cooling, calming, and nurturing. It has a subtle vibrational quality, of the om, that place of pure stillness.
Lavender is widely used as an aromatherapeutic oil to calm both the mind and the body. For the skin, lavender also has these soothing properties. It can be used as a burn ointment, for insect bites and itchy skin, to ease bruising, wounds and other topical ailments.

1. Both olive oil and beeswax have incredible skin-loving properties.
2. They are both grown and harvested in an organic or regenerative way.
3. Not only are they available locally, but they are also 2 of the highest quality ingredients I have ever worked with.
The first product we are updating is the Menthol Rub. We’ve added an extra boost of CBD and increased the amount of both arnica and st. john’s wort extracts to dive even deeper into muscle aches and pains. The texture is slightly different from our original formula, softer, creamier, more like a salve than a balm. A little goes a long way and the relief is lasting.
The new base of this formula, olive oil and beeswax, melts immediately upon contact with the skin. Massage area after application for 2-3 minutes for rapid relief. We feature the same uplifting and energizing essential oil blend as the original and we think you’re going to love it!
Hemp CBD (Cannabis sativa)
This herb has powerful effects on both mind and body. We work closely with our cultivators in Colorado and Oregon to ensure 100% organically grown, pesticide-free, full-spectrum hemp oil (FSO). Our FSO is high in cannabidiol (CBD) a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that helps calm inflammation, boost the immune system, and so much more. The results of using CBD on the skin can be immediate and lasting, as it helps to nourish and repair damaged or problematic skin.
Mexican Arnica (Heterotheca inuloides)
We cultivate and also source this flower to be used as a topical remedy for bruises, sprains, rheumatism, varicose veins and arthritis. The active compounds in Mexican arnica have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antiseptic properties. The flowers are solar infused for up to six weeks in organic olive oil and in miron violet glass. We add this infused oil to our Herbal Balm and Menthol Rub.
St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
This herb has been used in Europe to treat skin infections, small wounds and bruises. St. John’s Wort also contains antibacterial and antiviral compounds. The flowers are solar infused in olive oil for 6+ weeks before formulation in the Menthol Rub.
Menthol (Mentha arvensis)
Menthol is the solid constituent of the essential oils of mint. Its cooling, tingling properties help melt away tension and muscle fatigue. Menthol’s powerful aroma helps to open airways and clear sinus and chest congestion. We use fair-trade, certified-organic corn mint in our Menthol Rub.

Bathing rituals are a sacred thing. A self care ceremony that invites one to slow down, to come into balance with both mind and body. The harvest season is often a time of routine and repetition, returning to school, work and the like.
On both a physical and emotional level, shifts begin to take place in autumn. We see it in the garden, the death on the vine and the leaves beginning to turn from their summery green to the golden hues of fall. This is the perfect time to create a new ritual, to shed old habits that are no longer serving and to embrace the flow that comes with a daily practice. For me, the perfect ritual for autumn is an herbal bath.
Pour 1/2 of the bag of Bath Brew soaking salts into the tub as you draw yourself a bath. Drop the tea bag into the water and steep for at least 15 minutes before soaking. Take a moment before you enter to quiet your mind. If you’d like, you can add a few tablespoons of hydrosol or a full dropper of the Full Spectrum Hemp tincture to your bath for an extra soothing soak. For best results, soak for 30-60 minutes while relaxing.
Light a candle, read a book, listen to relaxing music, make a ritual out of it.
After bathing, mist face and body liberally with hydrosol. While skin is still dewy, apply a thin layer of the Zen Cream. PRO TIP: dab around eyes, forehead and neck before bed for additional nourishment. You can also use the hydrosol after you apply to the cream to lock in moisture and enhance absorption.
* You can compost the contents of your tea bag. This cotton bag can be rinsed, dried and refilled for multiple uses. You can use herbs such as chamomile, lavender, rosemary, and many more. This is an invitation to go deeper into the ritual of self care on a regular basis. Listen to the plants, choose the ones that are calling to you for further inquiry and discovery.
Epsom salts (Magnesium sulfate)
Full spectrum hemp (Cannabis sativa)
Colloidal Oats (Avena sativa)
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
Rose (Rosa damascena)

MCT Oil has been rising in popularity for a while now and for good reason. Studies have shown that MCT oil has many health benefits from brain function to weight loss and beyond. “MCT” is an abbreviation for “medium-chain triglycerides,” which are more plainly put, medium-sized fat molecules. MCTs can be found in coconut oil, grass-fed butter, yogurt, palm oil, goat milk and breast milk. These essential fatty acids are the building blocks of triglycerides similar to the way that amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.
MCTs are most often derived from coconut oil because it has been shown that approximately 50% of the fat in coconut oil is MCT oil. It is no wonder that coconuts are such a powerful super food! When ingested, you body converts MCTs into molecules called ketones. These molecules help to burn fat, block food cravings and enhance brain function.
BRAIN HEALTH
Epilepsy
One important study demonstrated the power of capric acid, which is found in MCT oil, has on seizures. It showed that capric acid blocked certain brain receptors that were involved in triggering seizures in epileptic patients. In some cases, MCT oil was more effective at managing and controlling seizures than a pharmaceutical anti-epileptic drug.

Alzheimer’s Disease
There are several studies showing the benefits of a ketogenic diet for Alzheimers disease and dementia. According to one study, there was measurable improved cognition in patients who were diagnosed with Alzheimers disease after a single dose MCT oil. This study showed that 20-70 grams of MCT oil on a daily basis significantly improved Alzheimer’s-related symptoms.
Source: Effects of beta-hydroxybutyrate on cognition in memory-impaired adults
WEIGHT LOSS
MCT oil has been shown to escalate the release of peptide YY and lepton, two important hormones that are crucial for making sure the body feels satiated after a meal. One study demonstrated that individuals who consumed approximately two tablespoons of MCT oil before breakfast were compelled to eat less during their next meal compared to the cohort of individuals who were given pure coconut oil.
Source: Coconut oil has less satiating properties than medium chain triglyceride oil
HEART HEALTH
There are many studies that link increased MCT consumption to a reduced risk of heart disease. In one particular study, MCT oil decreased one very important inflammatory marker called C-reactive protein. This specific protein is linked to increased chances of heart disease among other inflammatory diseases.

Source: Medium-chain triglycerides and monounsaturated fatty acids potentiate the beneficial effects of fish oil on selected cardiovascular risk factors in rats
INHIBITS BACTERIAL GROWTH
Many studies have shown that MCTs have anti-fungal and antimicrobial effects.
In one study, coconut oil substantially inhibited the growth of Clostridium difficile, a bacteria that can cause life-threatening diarrhea. Scientists believe that the antimicrobial and anti-fungal benefits of the MCTs, specifically lauric, capric and caprylic acids, are what reduce bacterial and yeast growth in the gut when consuming coconut oil.

I’m sure there are a multitude of other scientific studies that show the benefits of MCT oil but as you can see from the ones we citied above, the results are undeniable. MCT oil can have significant impacts on overall health.
We ask that you bear with us through this transition so as not to waste any jars that have already been printed with our old label. We have a few cases left and we plan to use them up before we debut our new label design to match this new formula. We will apply a new sticker over the ingredients section until we sell out of the old bottles.
* Please note, we will NOT be restocking the small size (0.5oz, 15ml) Full Spectrum Hemp tincture once it is sold out. We will only have once size available for purchase, 1oz (30ml) moving forward.
Thank you for your support as always. And thank you for walking through the changes of life with us in grace and love!

I am always on the lookout for plants that help protect our skin, both from the inside and from the outside. When I stumbled upon a study about beta carotene (β-carotene) and its potential benefits when applied topically, I was inspired to start experimenting. This led me down a rabbit hole I was not anticipating but I must say, it was insightful to say the least.
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble nutrient that is essential for all humans. This vitamin is responsible for a myriad of crucial life functions including embryo development, maintenance of the immune system, color vision, and skin health. Vitamin A can be found in two natural sources: retinoids, which come from animal sources (including retinol) and carotenoids, which come from plants (including β-carotene). Specifically for the skin, vitamin A regulates the immune response and homeostasis of the epithelial (outer) tissues and mucosa through its metabolite, retinoic acid (RA). It is one of the first responders when the skin is cut or damaged.
Carrots contain a high amount of β-carotene which is a precursor for vitamin A. The body naturally converts β-carotene into vitamin A. As we now know, vitamin A is essential for skin health as it promotes tissue formation, protects the outer layers of the skin and neutralizes free radicals. Since β-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A, you can see why it has so many benefits for the skin. There are several other carotenoids found in carrots such as lycopene, lutein, and zeaxantuin which all have important functions, including antioxidant and photo-protective activities. These carotenoids are what give carrots their vibrant orange color.
We procured fresh, organic carrots from our local farmers market to make this exquisite seasonal oil. First, we dehydrated the shredded carrots. Then, we infused the dried carrots in a blend of oleic acid rich oils of sunflower and grape seed. Each day the jar is placed in the sun for 1-3 hours and shaken gently. After 4 weeks, we strained the golden orange oil, added a few other all-star ingredients and viola! We are delighted to offer to you this incredible SUN KISSED OIL
In addition to the carrots, we added oils of jojoba and olive that were infused with chamomile, helichrysum, rose and calendula. These four, natural ingredients also have incredible skin-nourishing properties which enhance the overall protective and regenerative benefits from this formula. The Sun Kissed Oil delivers immediate results when used daily before and after sun exposure. It can also be used for dermatitis, eczema, scar healing and reduction (especially after surgery or stitches) rashes, insect bites and extremely dry skin. Our favorite way to use the Sun Kissed Oil is in conjunction with two other summer essentials: the Hemp Butter and a seasonal Hydrosol.

1.7oz Seasonal Hydrosol of your choice
The sulfur clay in this mask was honorably harvested with my own two hands from the sacred lands we now call the Ojai Valley. We ask for permission to harvest from the water first. We ask the plants and all of the creatures who live nearby if we may take a small amount to share with our community. We make offerings of tobacco, prayers and meditations with the land. When the answer is a clear yes, only then, are we inclined to ask the stewards of the private lands for permission as well.
We distilled each essential oil for this formulation from plants grown and harvested in the Ojai Valley. Lavender, helichrysum, cedar wood and white sage essential oils combined with powdered Yerba Santa and a touch of Fuller’s Earth Clay evoke a sense of what it feels like to be held within the earth. Its scent is warming, pungent and sulfury. The texture is smooth and varied, providing a versatile palette of minerals to help exfoliate and replenish tired or dull skin. Our base ingredient, sulfur clay, is an incredible drawing agent that is nourishing while simultaneously helps to clarify and rejuvenate the skin.
Sulfur one of the most abundant naturally occurring elements found on earth. It is involved in nearly every metabolic function in the body. So much so, that approximately 0.25% of your total body weight is sulfur. Every single cell in your body contains sulfur. This abundant and versatile element is known as “nature’s beauty mineral” due to its effects on collagen production. It enhances and plumps up the cells, helping to produce more collagen which helps to improve skin elasticity. Sulfur is the most concentrated in keratin, the main ingredient to healthy hair, skin and nails. Sulfur also calms and soothes irritated skin, relieves pain and helps the body eliminate toxins. The clay that we harvested for this mask is rich in sulfur and other minerals such as sulfate, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, silica, zinc and nitrogen.
The combination of this powerful sulfur mask with the Tonic and a seasonal hydrosol is incredible. The results are immediate. Hydrosols are naturally acidic, helping to tighten and tone the pores without disrupting the delicate skin microbiome. The Tonic contains raw apple cider vinegar along with honey, CBD and nettles which all help to boost and brighten complexion all the while drawing impurities out of the skin. Should you experience patches of acne after using this mask (thats a good detox sign!) the Tonic can also be used as a spot treatment to dry out any zits or boils. It helps to reduce redness and inflammation and has many other wonderful benefits for the skin.
Additionally, the Tonic is an excellent formula for spring cleaning from the inside out. Raw apple cider vinegar and stinging nettles along with CBD help to gently cleanse the internal organs. This formula contains a high amount of CBG, a cannabinoid that is being heavily researched for its effects on anxiety and stress. You can read more about the Tonic in our Journal post here.
Add 2 teaspoons of the powder to a small dish for mixing. Drop by drop, add hydrosol, a dropper full of Tonic, honey or any other wet ingredient to the clay until a juicy, mud consistency is reached. Apply to clean face, neck and chest, avoiding eyes, nostrils and lips. Let dry for 20-30 minutes. Once mask is dry, reconstitute with warm water. Gently exfoliate while rinsing with circular motions. Rinse and pat dry. Mist liberally with hydrosol before applying the Youth Serum, Zen Cream, or Hemp Butter.
This mask can be used as a full body treatment or to target specific areas for detoxification such as the arm pits and lymphatic channels. After using this face and body mask, you may experience some detoxification. The sulfur in the clay draws impurities to the surface of the skin to be expelled from the body. After the initial detox period, this mask may help to tone and clarify skin. For best results, use once per week.
Please note this mask smells like sulfur and may linger on clothing and skin after treatment. If you are allergic to sulfur, we do not recommend this product for you.
1oz Menthol Rub
1oz Full Spectrum Oil
A boost of cooling menthol immediately dissolves discomfort and increases blood flow. A long-lasting cooling effect calms tension, clears sinuses, and uplifts mood. The Menthol Rub can be used as a vapor rub on the neck and chest for sinus congestion, symptoms from asthma, seasonal allergies, or colds. It can also be used as a topical balm for muscle strain, injury or aches.
The Full-Spectrum Oil is an agricultural hemp extract that is abundant in naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, vitamins, omega fatty acids, trace minerals and other beneficial components, emulsified in organic, cold-pressed hempseed oil.
The extraction method used to make our oil yields a full-spectrum extract that contains more than 80 different compounds. Many other types of nutritional constituents present in this oil include amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins (including B1, B2, B6, D), fatty acids (including omegas 3 and 6), trace minerals (including iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, potassium), beta carotene, chlorophyll, flavonoids, ketones, nitrogenous compounds, alkanes, glycosides, and terpenes. Learn more about how CBD works in our Hemp Guide.
Seasonal allergies are part of the spring time territory for most of us. We've put together the perfect pair of products to assist your mind and body when pollen is out and about so that you can be out and about too!
Findings from a 2009 study showed that cannabinoids are capable of slowing the activation of T-cells, a specific kind of white blood cell, in mice. CBD may be able to inhibit antibody responses and reduce allergic symptoms by impairing the release of these cells.
Another study from 2014 demonstrated that terpenes, specifically alpha-pinene which is commonly found in cannabis sativa, can also help to lower antibody levels. Researchers observed that the mice rubbed their eyes, nose and ears less frequently after exposure to alpha-pinene. The mice also had lower levels of immunoglobulin E, a compound that releases histamines which are responsible for allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, and swelling of the nasal cavities.
Additionally, a 2005 study showed that certain cannabinoids may actually prevent heightened histamine responses by suppressing the activation of mast cells which trigger histamine release. Inflammation plays a key roll during the onset of allergies and as we know, CBD has been shown to reduce overall inflammation. A 2019 study showed that CBD can also help reduce inflammation in the airways which can be helpful for those who also suffer from asthma.
We believe the best way to combat inflammation is with a daily dose of CBD. Ingest 5-10 drops of the Full Spectrum Oil twice daily. For best results, try morning and evening or as needed throughout the day. After a 30 day period, how do you feel? If you are having intense seasonal allergy episodes, you can increase the dose.
To assist you at the onset of seasonal allergies, nothing works better than the Menthol Rub. Apply to neck and chest, even a touch under nostrils if you are having trouble clearing the nasal cavity. A boost of cooling menthol immediately opens up the airways and reduces sinus congestion. You can use the Menthol Rub as needed for relief throughout the day and before bed each evening. If you are experiencing tension headaches from allergy symptoms, you can also use the Menthol Rub on the back of the neck and temples for relief.

The flowers are blooming, bees are a buzzing and the natural world once again comes to life. We've been out in the garden everyday, harvesting and distilling orange blossoms, getting our seedlings started and tending to the awakening soil in our raised beds. The orange blossoms seem to have come much earlier this year on account of the December rains that blessed our valley. We are also seeing the first flowers blooming on the hummingbird sage and our little apricot tree has already begun to show signs to fruit. The sun is shining and the trees signal to each other, it's time to give, to create and awaken once more.
I've been anchoring deep into the mother earth energy and plant awareness over the past month. Just as the seasons around us change, so to do our internal environments. I am finding it a bit more challenging to get back our into the world, the human world that is. So I trust this time in nature is exactly where I need to be at this moment. Rather than forcing, simply allowing. Letting go of any judgements, self or otherwise, about what I should or could be doing with my time.
On this day of perfect balance, I honor Father Sky and Mother Earth. I am transported again to the land, to the place that always gives more than it takes. I have again been reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer and I shed a tear in nearly every chapter. Her words pierce my heart with both joy and sadness. I would love to share this with you today, one of the passages that has been working with me on so many levels. It feels timely and fitting on this spring equinox, the time of the mother, pregnant with possibility and a very special gift for the world.

We are delighted to launch our new seasonal bundle!
Our WINTER LOVE bundle celebrates going deeper into the parts of our physical and emotional bodies that need attention and love this time of year. We invite you to get intimate, with yourself or with a partner.
Back by popular demand is our seasonal Bee Balm. This delicious face and body moisturizer is a multi-use skincare salve made from just 5 simple ingredients sourced from the Ojai Valley. The Bee Balm is an oil-based salve, designed to lock in moisture during these dry, winter months. It can also be used as a deeply nourishing hand and foot cream, lick-able lip conditioner, hair styling salve, wound and burn ointment, personal lubricant and more. Any skin care woe that ails you, this is balm is the antidote. It’s gentle yet effective, suitable for children and pets too! For added hydration, mist liberally with hydrosol before application. We found this 2-step hydration ritual to be so effective that we have added our favorite and most popular hydrosol to this bundle, Orange Blossom.
As they are naturally acidic, hydrosols have the power to protect and repair the skin while providing nourishment and balance. We distill fresh orange blossoms, harvested in season, with a copper alembic still. The Orange Blossom hydrosol is unique and intoxicating, boasting notes of fresh florals with grape and fruity after tones. The scent of the hydrosol uplifts mood and balances emotions. When applied topically, this hydrosol hydrates and tones the skin, helping to restore the skin’s natural vitality and elasticity. The aroma of orange blossoms evokes focus and concentration, especially in children and young adults. It supports physical and emotional detoxification and can be a great ally for working with changing habits of addiction. Internally, orange blossoms are said to help calm the nervous system and caffeine jitters. The taste is exquisite, try a spritz in your water bottle or directly in your mouth!
In honor of the season of love in this brief moment before spring blooms, our WINTER LOVE bundle also includes a Ritual Intentions kit. For me personally, I am in no shape to begin anything new on January 1. It takes a month or two before I can feel the wind in my sails again and for me, the first week of February is a great time to begin a new. The Ritual Intentions kit is a tool to help guide you into intention and ritual for a new year.
Prepare a physical space for ceremony. Clear your mind and set your intentions. Place a spoonful in a non-flammable dish. Flame and burn with intent for 30 seconds then blow out. Let smoke fill the space.
There are several other ways to use your Ritual Intentions Kit. You can open the jar and simply let the aroma fill the space. You can place a teaspoon in a cotton bag to carry the scent of Ojai wherever you go. Add a few teaspoons to your bath for an intentional soak. Bury a pinch in the earth as tribute. Release into a flowing stream and serene lake. However the plants speak to you, let your intuition guide your ritual.
Draw yourself a hot bath. Set up the space with candles, music, whatever makes you feel the most relaxed and luxurious. Add some of the Ritual Intention herbs to a non-flammable dish. With intention, light your incense and let flame for 30 seconds. Gently blow out the flame and let the smoke fill the space. Take a moment here to unwind, follow your breath to your own inner space a relaxation and bliss.
Then, add a pinch of these herbs to your bath along with epson salts, fresh or dried flowers and a teaspoon of hydrosol. Soak with intention for the allotted time of your choosing before pulling the plug and letting all of your woes go down the drain. Gently pat dry with a clean towel.
If you don’t have time for a bath, or don’t have a bath tub, you can enjoy a steamy shower instead!
After your bath or shower, spritz face, neck and body with hydrosol. Take a moment here and let your intentions sink in, deeper and deeper. Let the uplifting aroma of orange blossoms transport your mind and body to the most calm and serene place. Your own inner retreat.
While skin is still dewy with hydrosol, apply a thin layer of Bee Balm to face, neck and body. A light application on top of the hydrosol helps to lock in moisture. The Bee Balm is nectar to the skin, providing nourishment to your body and mind alike.
You can perform this ritual daily after cleansing or anytime your skin needs a boost! If you would like to go explore intimacy with yourself or with another, the Bee Balm can also be used as a personal lubricant or massage balm. It has the perfect texture with just a little grip! Go deeper into intimacy with the Ritual Intentions Kit with yourself or with a partner. Voice your intentions to each other before burning or burying some of the herbs.

On these 3 days of the sun standing still, the darkest night of the year, it was custom for the Northern Germanic tribes to participate in a night of sacrifice. They revere this night as a holy night, a night to sacrifice sin and crime. They described a sin as a personal pollution of one’s being by behavioral or thought actions. A sin is a personal contamination, one that must be healed, sacrificed, in order to maintain the health of the tribe. It was also custom to atone for one’s crimes, which are defined as an action of damage done to others. So in healing oneself, you actually heal the tribe. It is in the ritual where things get much more interesting.
Here we find a new word, Modraniht - translating as “mother’s night.” The shamanic women of these tribes would hold a ritual ceremony, for three nights. From December 24 through the 26, anyone who had sinned or committed a crime must come to the women to be given a psychedelic mushroom elixir or more likely mead, to be washed free and clean of their sins. Each who attends the ritual makes it a point to sacrifice oneself, give up your own sins and thus this night became known as the night of sacrifice. Shedding sins is what keeps the culture intact as a whole, healing yourself means healing the community. Yuletide was a time of reconciliation of sins and crimes. After this night, each would go out into the world and atone to those who they had wronged. One was absolved of the offenses they created the year before.
The tribes of norther Europe lived and practiced what we now call “paganism or gnosticism.” Both words do a disservice to the authenticity of these cultures. And if we look hard enough through history, we see that the stories we hear today and read about in history books are not always whole truths. These tribes did not believe in slavery. At their core, many of these were more egalitarian than many cultures that exist today. It was because of this, that the history we are told is different than the history that actually happened.
As the Holy Roman Empire began to expand its territory, the Byzantine rule eventually overcame these smaller tribes. It is because of the Byzantine Empire, that “mother’s night” became a night of human sacrifice rather than its intended personal, internal sacrifice. And after they had slaughtered millions of women throughout Northern Europe for practicing “dark, healing arts” they turned their atrocities into those of the women they slaughtered. The empire was so afraid of the power of this ritual that the genocide of these women lead to the outlawing of medicinal beers all together in the 1500s. History was told, one of a “superstitious and primitive” people living in these tribes, when in reality, they were more sophisticated and evolved than we are today. To understand that helping the ones who sin, both against others but also against themselves, they are the ones who must be healed. They are the ones who hold the key to balance and harmony in the community. It leads us to another curious thread, the healing power of the psychedelic mushroom which was also practiced by the Siberian tribes around the same time frame.
So you see here we have the psychedelic mushroom, once again making its appearance on the winter solstice. Interestingly enough, the mushroom effects the linguistic centers of the brain. In the codex, the beliefs of many of these tribes are described. And when we find the word sin in these writings, we learn that the original sin is “name stealing.” This can be interpreted in many ways but essentially they believed that the biggest sin, the most harm one can cause to oneself or to others, is telling a lie. This is the deepest alteration of language itself. Being an advanced and as wiki states “a medieval North Germanic ethnolinguistic group ancestral to modern Scandinavians,” it is no coincidence that this was through to be the original sin. The Mother’s Night ritual was meant alter the inner relationship with words to heal the individual and the culture. And that is why it was so powerful.
After these past two years, I can clearly see how history is told rather than recorded. We have been living through an incredible time, globally experiencing things we have never experienced before. In this my own experience, I see name stealing. I am witnessing the lies and the destruction they have caused. And in this witnessing, I must first hold myself accountable. I must heal myself to heal the tribe. My intention this year is of that, impeccability of my words. Of my thoughts and actions both to others and myself.
I found this such an interesting history to ponder and I cannot take much credit for the content of this post. I did my best to distill the words of Clif, into a digestible story, one that I am still meditating on. Blessings to you in this yuletide, these three days of unwavering stillness. In the time of darkness, may we find our way back to the light. Our own inner light, ready to provide warmth and integrity first to oneself, and then to others. May we find simplicity in the chaos. And wisdom in the darkest moments so that we may all heal each other to move forward into the light. Dance it into existence with our Yule Tide playlist.

I am a descendant of the Yurok tribe in Northern California. My great-great-great grandmother lived amongst her people on the Klamath River, her name I still do not know. Stories passed down from my grandmother, whose mother, Melcina, was born a Yurok woman who married a French man, are few and far between. Melcina ended up in San Francisco before she married Dewey, my great grandfather, who was also of Yurok decent. After they married, they moved to Colorado, and then to Utah, where my father and later myself, grew up. My grandmother Ann always made sure we knew where we came from, but I think her past was even hidden from her.
Interestingly, I moved to San Francisco in 2013 and surely, it felt like home. It wasn’t until we moved to Ojai and I started working with different local sages, that I realized why I felt like I was home. I was tending to the lands of my ancestors. I was working with their plants, their healing modalities and their traditions. I had access to the spirits of those ancestors, not in the stories and half truths I’d come to know of my origins, but in the practice of working with plants. I realized, my ancestors were already in me, a direct link to heal that wound I so deeply felt in my late 20s.
Through distillation and plant exploration, I am healing that wound. I am several generations detached from the traditions of my ancestors but the connection is living and thriving in me, in my work. I am so grateful for the sage plant, for bringing me back to that inner knowing. For showing me how to reconnect with my ancestors in the most fulfilling way.
Over the last few years, we have taken several herbal courses here in Ojai. One of my favorite teachers is Dr. James Adams. He is a kind and gentle man, intelligent and very humble. His published works have provided rich sustenance for this journey I am on and I am so grateful to have met him. He so generously provides a recipe for a sage liniment in his book, Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West. This book is a study of the traditional healing methods of the Chumash through a pharmaceutical perspective. Cecelia Garcia, the late Chumash healer, coauthored the book and provides much insight into the Chumash healing modalities.
This formula was more than an experiment in the studio. It revealed truths, buried deep in my ancestral history that were hidden to me. Building on the original forumla, we added locally grown hemp and several sage hydrosols to the formula. It is a composition of time and love, all plants lovingly grown in our own garden. We are delighted to be offering this very special liniment to you.
Thank you to the sage, for connecting me to this land, my ancestors, my self. Thank you, to the earth and sky and the water that runs through. Thank you to the Chumash, who still live and work in this valley. And thank you to James Adams and Cecelia Garcia for your priceless knowledge and willingness to share it with the world.
“This liniment is rubbed liberally onto painful areas of the body. Pain relief occurs within twenty seconds and last for six hours or more. Even pain from broken bones, cancer, and chronic back pain can be treated with this liniment. When the pain returns, the liniment can be reapplied. The liniment evaporates from the skin and is very safe. Pain is felt in the skin and is most effectively and safely treated in the skin. The liniment has cured opioid addiction in several people.”

The sweet and musky Helichrysum combined with the floral and herbaceous Rose Geranium into one perfectly balanced hydrosol
]]>
We’ve taken two of the most powerful skin healing herbs and distilled them together into one incredible hydrosol. This co-distillation of Helichrysum and Rose Geranium brings together both musk and floral in the most beautiful way. The hydrosol is highly aromatic and energetic, boasting notes of bright rose, burnt honey and maple. It’s heaven in a bottle.
Rose geranium is one of the top skin care waters for balancing oil production. It’s gentle toning and adaptogenic properties make it an excellent every day hydrosol for face and body regardless of skin type. Rose geranium is known as a humectant, which means it helps to draw in and retain moisture. This in turn, nourishes and restores environmentally stressed or damaged skin.
Helichrysum has been used for centuries as topical healing herb, so much so that it has earned the notorious nickname, immortelle. Helichrysum contains powerful antioxidants and terpenes which help to nourish and regenerate skin cells. It has long been used to restore vitality and elasticity and was one of the most sought after beauty herbs in ancient Egyptian cultures. Helichrysum has been used to aid in healing scar tissue after injuries or surgeries and has natural calming properties.
When these two herbs came together in the still, something magical happened. The floral rose geranium is perfectly balanced with the dry musky scent of the helichrysum. The texture of the hydrosol is silky smooth, packed with essential oils and other water-soluble compounds. It is balanced energetically and the plants themselves sing from the bottle with each mist.

Mabon is a time to celebrate the second harvest, the time to reap the last of the ripening fruit before the third and final harvest, Samhain. In ancient times, Mabon was celebrated for 7 days, filled with feasts and bonfires from grateful hearts of the community.
For me this year, this harvest feels particularly portent. What are the fruits of my labor in 2021? What has died on the vine? What needs more tending? If you've been following along with GARA, you'll know that I often speak in metaphor. I find this concept to be helpful for introspection and do firmly believe that as above, so below. What is happening out in the world, both cultural and natural, is also happening on some level in me.
In reflecting on past traditions, folklore and myth, I find a way forward. The laws of nature have taught us that, there is no going back. Rather than looking back to recreate these rituals and celebrations, I find it more interesting to see how we can apply them to the present. Not literally, but internally. What can we learn from the stag and the oak? And the story of Persephone? Does she represent some aspect of me here and now?
These stories and myths have meaning far beyond the physical world. They contain knowledge, cultural commentary, lessons and often reflect some aspect of our reality at any given time. A story can be read multiple times, each bringing forth a new meaning, new perspective or insight. What changes each time is not the story, but the listener.
So the place to go today is inward, to weed out all of the dogma and old stories -- those which have become myths. The equinox is a powerful time to initiate the death of these myths, the old stories that are no longer true. As with all things on this planet, truth too, is always evolving. It is informed by experience and cannot remain stagnant. The most powerful thing we can do for ourselves is to use our imagination, to traverse the inner landscape at every opportunity. Walk through the portal.
